Three Weeks Ago

Driving back from Coachella at 3AM on Sunday night to beat the traffic after a hundred too many hours in the sun and a few hundred too many vodka drinks, I had a religious epiphany. It's hard to be sure of these things, even Paul the Apostle's testament is thought by some to have been inspired by heat related exhaustion.

I had a vision of a glowing cross upon a hillside. Or maybe I saw a cross with lights on it on a hillside. It's hard to be sure of these things. It was not the first time I'd seen such a thing. But what was remarkable about it was not that I had seen the thing, but the thoughts that it conjured within me. I felt not glorious Christian ecstasy, but an intense sense of anticipation for the new Justice album. I wondered even, maybe, could this be the second coming (of Daft Punk)?

Paul heard the sound of Jesus Christ's voice telling him not to persecute Christians anymore. I heard the sound of roaring sawtooth synthesizers telling me never to stand still again. Just as Paul felt in the presence of Christ at all times, I also knew that I would never be alone again. Paul was blind and didn't eat for 3 days, I could see well enough through my sweat soaked bangs and ate a little, but I saw Justice 3 days in a row.

But I also heard a voice, and it was the voice of Red Foxxworth. The voice told me not to post any of the new Justice songs. It said that posting the new Justice songs, would not do anything to strengthen the faith of the converted, and that hype had reached a reasonable enough level to ensure that the rest of the world would be shown the way soon after the album's release date.

Two Months Ago

I promised I would post this a very long time ago, and it's a shame I didn't do it earlier because y'all could have been rocking out to it in a very serious way that much sooner. If you were lucky enough to have come across it somewhere else, then Justice bless you.

Paris - Is This Thing Loaded???? mix.

I don't have a tracklisting for it but you'll definitely recognize some of the tracks, but it's also packed full of hits from eras bygone but fondly recalled and future classics and it's mixed so tightly you will half expect a jack-in-the-box to jump out of your speakers. I am not kidding.

The flowers are more than out at this point and it's time for me to go back to the half of the year in which I am, for some bizarre reason, viscerally terrified of bees. I've never been stung and I have a fairly high pain threshold (flexes muscles) but I run and scream whenever I see one. Bees bad, Summer music good. i.e., Daft Punk playing in LA on July 21st. I am listening to a set of theirs from Twilo courtesy of Hometaping (possibly the best design I've ever seen in an mp3 blog), and though it was recorded in October of 98, I would be happy to hear it out this July of 07. Though massive audio visual pyramids and ableton magic will suffice just fine.

First up is a track which we lifted from Fluokids for reasons that are patently obvious. M. Redhotcar seems to have turned this up at Masala, a blog which I am now happy to know.
Todosantos are 3 fun kids from Brooklyn by way of Caracas. Those 2 cities (and more) seem to give a pretty decent indication of their sound. They flex summer muscles here with cartoon 2 step that's all digital fire hydrants, pixellated bikinis, fluo ipods and bubbly bass. The track's title is completely coincidental and unconnected to us, but you'll understand why it caught our attention. Fiery label of abundant current currency Flamin Hotz is wisely choosing to put this out this summer.

Lovely Chords are our wonderful Argentinian friends who have previously instructed you to suck on their ear and let you know that they push up on Frenchies. They seem to think that their disco is broken this time around, but you can judge for yourself. To us it sounds fragmented, possibly sprained and for a moment it looks like it could be serious, but as soon as the stabs (not as painful as they sound) come in at 1:23 you know it's going to be alright. Like Italo from mars, a kinder less tweaky Oizo, Kraftwerk 2007 or something I don't know, but I do know that these kids deserve your ears.

There's many sides to summer and while it's possible to spend over 24 hours in a club (I think) , I don't know why you would want to. There's more to summer than digital fire hydrants and pixellated bikinis, there's also Poney Poney. Just plain great summery AM pop music (and they know it). French kids know what they're doing. It's not even nececssary to point out which ones at this point, it's just a nation blessed with a generation of kids who know what the fuck is up. You probably know the song that did the rounds a while back (which Xavier from Justice helped them produce) "Junior", which got a release in the Arcade Mode limited 7" series, and "AM Music" came out on the wonderful and growing Rallye/Klee label in Japan. If it weren't for charming tics of speech, you'd probably never know these kids were French, and if it weren't for certain watermarks you'd never know what year this music had been made in, and in the future you probably won't be able to tell.

Some artists are able to invoke the past without forcing you to be actively nostalgic, instead compelling you to a state of passive continuity where the components of what made something great then are the same things that makes a thing great now. It might seem preposterous to get all THAT way about body music, especially the kind that uses hoovering sounds and sped up diva samples to get its point across, but I'm also the type of person that will tell you straight faced that I can relate to Ed Banger's music emotionally (and it's not always the obvious emotions, e.g. distortion does not = anger). So when I hear something that uses the past to build something new and fresh and now and (hopefully) future I can't help but open the clock. Anyway, Curses! has thankfully been picked up by Institubes, a label that knows what to do with the past (Surkin? Check out his remix of Para One [who, by the way, fucking KILLED it here in LA @ Check Yo Ponytail last week... he played with Boys Noize {who was also amazing}, and I can't fucking WAIT for his remix of Boys Noize.. Bobmo? Check out 'Home Alone').

We told you before when we were talking about Trouble & Bass that we'd be bringing this guy up (he's part of that crew in case you don't recall). This is sweat music. They mean it when they tell you that they will bass you. One of my favorite tracks of the year so far.

Acid Jacks are madcap party boys w/ a penchant for NO RAVE (almost considered posting this whole thing in pink just so the sheer blackness of that NO RAVE would glare into your soul as you read it). In their own words, 'a robust blend of machine, acid and awesome.' mstrkrft, tacteel and boy 8 bit (my favorite mix of the bunch) have already shown their love to 'Awake Since 78', a song which you surely know or at least have heard (acid jack boris tells me that someone in aus is writing their thesis on the song!!!). Blamma! Blamma! have found their way onto Acid Girls (hearts') again, though this time it's in fierce battle with Maximo Park. As has become customary for them, their technique is to spin their foe around in circles and loops until their native rock n roll tongue can speak only electro. It really is impressive to watch a talented street thug with a good right hook become a seasoned drum machine. Their jabs are stabs and their kicks are steady. All dumb fight metaphors aside, this is a really bangin track. Just the right amount of crazy and fun and tension.

so we haven't made good on our 'song a day' promise....and thats truly sad; but alas we do have some jems to drop. We have been doing alooooooot of remixing, so there will be some new Acid Girls material dropping soon, pls do keep up.

The first order of business here is a track out of NYC from Trouble & Bass who are on flaminhotz, who been releasing good works all the day long. Check them if you're in up in BK and peep their parties one of the greenest pastures of debaucherous night moves (2 words) one can find in the five boroughs. I first found this track whilst cheking a promo video for Hearthrob in boston, who incidentally have just released a (motion grafix/visuals?)dvd that i hope to have an opinion on soon; but the clips of the night i have seen thus far are pretty damn entertaining, the type of thing one might acquire some drugs for just to stare at the evil neon ghosts. Un-digress; Trouble & Bass is a label and crew which are made up of the pack of producers and DJs including: Drop the Lime, Math Head, Passions (whom you've previously gotten word of our fanciful feelings for), Star Eyes, Zach Shadetek, Starkey and Curses! (as far as i can tell anyway) More on Curses! later tho... Who doesn't love something with a finely crafted sample of rockwell anyway? The track weaves in and out of so many things that i can't necessarily tell what to call it...but both of us acid grrls fell head over with this thing the moment we heard it, and you should too, and always always let it get to that one part, or you won't be doing your set justice.

2 nice boys from belgium ala Geht's Noch doing a lil edit danceparty on the prodigy's 'girls', in a glittery crackhouse 9000 neon grid sort of way. All good things. Can't turn around without something saying 'girls' in neon around, yes? This continues that. We sincerely beleive it belongs in a strip club one day, and thats the best compliment we can pay really. I wanna play belguim so bad, i keep forgetting that i have this 'our drums are louder' image in my head, so we need to drop in and see if indeed there is some undiscovered force of bass in belgium. This also points out to me how fun key the original of this actually is/was/is tho made at the pinncale of the late electro hype. Go see the lads.

Ok, so here's the short version, because it's been tooooooo long to give you the long version.

Nightmoves and Ricky Haley are very nice people. Nightmoves had all kinds of stuff that made me go '?!' and it made all of us dance real crazy like, and possibly got Johnny Love into a fight that he would have won if I hadn't accidentally carried him away from what I thought was just another round of manly dance moves that look like a fight. Ricky was sure to have brought heat, but unfortunately, the CD players at Spider were set to DEEP FREEZE and so rejected his attempt to slay us ears-first. Sorry Ricky : ( But their California trip sounded suitably crazy, including all sorts of things who knows if they'd want me to share here that I can barely remember anyway. I hope to see them here or there again soon, and should you have the opportunity, you should as well. All that being said, the Monday night at Spider Club is no longer, as it proved to be too much work for all the too busy people involved. It was a fun two weeks though! Thanks, Rony (whose site is now linked to the right, and which you should check out if you like looking at pretty pictures of people (pretty or otherwise interesting looking)!

Right now you're like, 'Fuck, man, this is the short version? What the fuck? Where's the songs?' Well, you know what? The links to the songs are a different color and they're very easy to scroll down to, so by all means go ahead if you could care less about all this.

I feel like there was something in between this and the next thing, but my brain is all mushy now so the next thing henceforth according to the record shall read, 'Then we went to Paris and had the best time of our lives.' Well, it was up there anyway. All the Fluokids were incredible, and nice and wonderful and so cool that when they eventually make it over here, hearts will break. Pharrell was the world's nicest p-i-m-p, and he greeted us thusly, "You're sooo New Rave!" But with a French accent. Jamie took it as a diss, I took it like the sort of thing an old/new friend says to break the ice. Either way, it's true, a lot of Frenchies wear black and we don't really wear black at all. Tiva was there as well, and she is totally awesome and speaks five languages (I think?) and holds it down with ease. Met up with more cool people, Holly (who is from our HQ's zipcode, and is a snap at the camera as well as a fun drinking buddy and person in general), Idibi (rad dude, hip hop Fluo), Guillaume (rad dude, Fluo PR) & Bastien (amazing photographer whose work you probably already know from Fluokids) and drank whiskey in the Metro with them, walked passed MPs with M-16s who were completely unfazed by our antics. The French rule! We saw Les Plasticines & dATA at Le Paris Paris, the hardest to get into basement dive bar you can possibly imagine. I managed to spend 300 Euros on alcohol. Oh well. You can look at pictures on Holly's blog. Man, this is not a very short short version, maybe you should just skip ahead.

I'm sure you could guess that the Ed Banger party was incredible. The space was on (near?) the Champs Elysees. The ceiling was dripping sweat. The Ed Banger crew did what they do in very fine form, but to be honest, I was having so much fun in the Fluo room, that I barely ventured in there. The set of the night had to be Brodinski's, though. I'm sure you'll be hearing more about him soon. He's an incredible DJ and his remix of Klaxons w/ Yuksek is really great. Casper C and Skull Juice both killed it. Hianta was as cool and beautiful as expected, even if she was a little cruel to poor menthol smoking Jamie. It was darkly funny though.

I saw the Eiffel Tower out of the corner of my eye and kept walking for about twenty steps only to realize that I'd only paid the Eiffel Tower a passing glance. It was outside my frame of visibility by the time I realized it, and I couldn't really be bothered to walk back over to see it. Sorry, Eiffel Tower. Maybe next time.

Man... I don't know how much more I can write, to be perfectly honest. I feel like this is a slideshow and most of you have probably already skipped to the end, or even worse, just an overly detailed list of people and places. Anyway, Flash was hard because it was the same night we arrived back in the states, plus we've never sounded worse before. Oh well. Switch was incredible. He's a very nice guy, and he plays things you'll probably never be able to buy and you may never hear anyone else play ever. My sister got kicked out of the venue because she's dumb. Blow Up was great. Very hot. Jamie got glowstick juice all up in his mouth. Anne slapped the shit out of us and Dirty Dave. All in all, a fun night.

It's been a really fun few weeks. I'm kind of glad we're in a lull right now. It's given us time to regroup and be lazy and stuff (oops, i mean work on tracks and other productive things). Thank you very much to everyone who we've met recently, you're all fucking great.

I hope this hasn't come off as self congratulatory or anything. But you know how when you have to go visit your cousin (no, not like in The Teenagers song) and you're like, 'awww man, my cousin is lame and he puts crayons in his nose and coughs on my face when we talk.' But then you go and it turns out your cousin is into awesome music and knows the best places to dance and the best food to get at 4 AM and basically just all the rad shit you'd have never found on your own? It's like that. When that happens, you have to express your gratitude fully.

Which brings us to a fork in the road. There's still a song coming, don't worry. But there's one more thing to go over before we get to that. We have invited a new kid to come and play on our interweb site with us. His name is Dirty Dave and he's the best. Best at what, you ask? Well, he's certainly one of the best at throwing parties in LA. He graduated from the Phoenix Peyote Institute of Partyharding and is now doing his doctorate in Blow Up LA, along with Anne Lee. Only one question is off limits with Dave. Do NOT ask why they call him Dirty. Got that? Good. Otherwise, feel free to ask him about his mustache, or his former love of the Phoenix Suns, or what records he likes right now, or how he feels about, y'know, whatever. He is a senior fellow of the Acid Girls Trust. We have been vigilant in our lookout for fellows of the Trust, and Dave is the first. He is our esteemed colleague in techno. We are happy that he is willing to debase himself by posting here : ) , in this rank and moldy den of semi-frequent to wholly infrequent beat blogdom.

I promised you there would be music here. You probably think I'm a total prick for only posting one song after writing out the longest post ever made here. But dudes (and ladies), this song is pretty rich. You gotta let this one sit for a while before eating dessert. We have posted these guys before, in this same configuration. This is a different song and this remix is an altogether different thing for them. This is kind of like Soulwax's dub of Robbie Williams crossed with Audion's 'Mouth to Mouth'. It has the same kind of staircase incline of the Audion track, but with the tasteful epic-ness of the Soulwax track. It's an aural strobelight, speeding up and up until it's just a burst of white light. It does start off a bit uncertain on baby bird legs, kind of falling this way and that, until eventually it collects itself, staggered claps, swung hi-hats and misfired pixels, and propels forward toward the next track, challenging the selector to choose something worthy.

Keep an eye out for Blamma Blamma! and their new night, Neu Noise, at 93 Feet East in London. These kids are up to good things.

Oh man. Road to hell, best intentions, that whole thing. How many posts here begin or end with either an apology or a promise? Too many. It has been a fun week, leading up to another fun couple of weeks. How about we just pull a Groundhog Day but make it a Groundhog Monthandahalf forever and ever? Ok, nevermind.

Jamie wants to start a part of this blog for blogging things other than music, like, for instance, uhh, fonts. Would anyone be into that? He's a nerd. He's the resident Acid Nerd, kind of, but in a way that makes him way cooler than any of us. If I were to make a different section of this blog it would be for various recollections of watching the show 30 Rock. Dr. Leo Spaceman. Condi Rice as a lover. Maureen Dowd sending Alec Baldwin flowers. The little blue man. I could go on and on, but you don't come here for rambling about (hilarious) dumb tv shows, I guess. Pardon the lack of a segue here please.

The track that refuses to die. It's less pervasive than 'My Love' by a long shot, but it's still kind of everywherealways. This version of 'Me & U' is an awesome garage style tweak house thing with big boot drums and historical revisionism galore. Profondo J is in the habit of manufacturing club bangers, and despite this track's jacking-ness, it's a relatively more restrained moment for him. He catches his breath while you're moving your feet. As a measure of the longevity of this song, iTunes tells me I downloaded a very different version (the Liquid Pegasus Chamber Disco mix) of it on August 8th. I could have sworn it came from Daughters of Invention, but The Hype Machine tells me I am likely to have gotten it from Discobelle.

Moodyman with an itchy triggerfinger (pun intended). Are those Al Green samples? I don't know for sure, probably not, but the way the heartstrings get plucked say, "Why yes, they are." But they're more or less dispensed with early on in favor of something altogether more furtive but insistent. There's a romance of anxiety in this track by Brazillian producer Nostalgic Dance Orchestra. It is undeniably house. But the Moodyman thing is kind of accurate. This is definitely a faster tempo than the moody dude would typically work at, but there is the same amount of soul and life in it.

Speaking of anxiety, there's a ton of it in this next track, but it's not romantic. It's like serious stimulants coursing through the veins, paranoia, doom, violence, velocity, whatever. It's French and it's got elements of that sound, but it's way more ummmm... punk than most of it. This is a fast song, and it cycles through ideas with glee & seriousness. This is a worrisome and troubling song. What's happening in the (hypothetical) video?

Now that we've dispensed with the tunes, we would just like to remind you about a few things.
First off, tonight is the first night of our new residency at Spider Club in Hollywood, and we have the wonderful Nightmoves and the splendid Ricky Haley, along with LA's own Royal Rumble and DJ Skeet Skeet along for the ride. Rony of Ronysphotobooth.com is promoting this, and it's his first promotional endeavor, so come make a pro out of him (or at least a happy man) and come say hi.

Then we will be in Paris for the Ed Banger 4th Birthday party, with our favorites, the Fluokids, Skull Juice, Brodinski & more. We've never been to Paris so we're so excited to even be there. If you're in France drop us a line, we'll be there from the 8th to the 12th. We are also hoping that no one lets us near one of the many Parisian shops that we've been fantasizing about for the last 10 years of our magazine-buying lives (with our wallets in our pockets).

Then we're home for a couple blinks and next up is Switch at Check Yo Ponytail. We are so excited to see Switch play that you should probably bring the paddles. It's a heartstopping kind of affair. Buy tickets early because we want you to pass out too!

So it seems like mondays are go for new tracks, I like that as a juxtaposition of the fact that in the USSA new music (officially) comes out on tuesdays; but we all got the jump on that day and in turn we must now post the day before. Not that any of this will even hit a US record store soon or at all.

Aysam coming out swinging again, with his new bit of floor bleeder. With some of the necessary evil that we all like to see. Driving, arpy, insistant abrasive vocals, not your beardy older brother sort of dance music thats for sure. Anyone making this whilst repping barry manilow and moodyman deserves a listen. Sex in dallas original, out on kitty-yo sometime, however I don't know that the rmx will come out there too, looks like they have'nt done much since 04 there.

This next one dropped in this morning from The Glass, whom had the track won't bother me and if I remember correctly it was showing up everywhere for a while, my/our sets even. The remixes are a bit 'wide' if i do say so, coming from Kasper Bjorke, rinocerose, and stretch armstrong; the most relevant to me of which is the K. Bjorke remix, one half of Filur with tomas barford. The vocal loses me somewhere in the middle to the point that I don't know if there is even a coherent thought left in their.my.our head; but let's not get academic about it, the mix sounds thick and has a half-evil (dare i say ®åve-esque) sort about it. Don't shoot the messenger.

Today I face a difficult decision. Not, like, Sophie's Choice difficult, but kind of like, 'Brown... or... red?' difficult. I have too much good music to post, you see. Couldn't possibly get to all of it tonight, and to be honest, I don't think it would do the music justice to give it up all at once anyway. Soooo.... you may be well served to check back sooner than we generally manage to post a follow up batch of tunes.

I struggle with finding a way to manage my tendencies toward hyperbole when it comes to describing something I like. Every good movie I see is AMAZING and every good new song I find is MY FAVORITE and every good night I have is THE BEST NIGHT EVER. Part of me will always be 12. But seriously, like, All Night Dance Party are AMAZING and this first song is MY FAVORITE and if they came to LA it would be THE BEST NIGHT EVER.

I know I really like it because it doesn't really sound like much else that I'm digging right now. Because it's deceptively simple music, it could lazily be described by cliche notes: it's a bit retro, a bit cinematic and a bit melancholic, but in actuality I think it's just kind of timeless. It probably will sound old one day, and maybe it does already, but so is the wheel and we still use that thing all the time and they still find rad new ways to use them (Kavinsky, anyone?).

I found these guys through the exceedingly awesome Risky Bizniz, a blog well worth your daily perusal. I listened to this song pretty much over and over again all day then I wrote them a message to see if they had anything else they wanted to share. They were kind enough to send this track:

More perfect electro pop for bittersweet dancefloors and unrequited android love affairs, futurisitic oil slick car collissions, mechanical tangos, dramatic death scenes and/or barely holding on. If the world is a just place, next time I post them I'll be able to put a 'buy this here' link next to their name.

This sort of great band always existed, it just travels from city to city and reforms in new permutations every few years. It's not a diss of The Violets at all. They sound like they have their own unique thing going on, but that's not really the appeal to me. I like them as part of this continuum. It's a right place right time kind of thing. When talking about this band people will likely be mentioning The Long Blondes and Siouxie and the Banshees, but don't hold that against them (why would you? those are both cool bands in their own right), because, for me at least, the appeal of this band is more about where this song would sit on a mixtape, than any current, past or future trends in production or vocal technique.

Ok, who am I trying to kid? I proved in the last post that I couldn't go too long without talking about techno in some way, shape or form. You know how we like the fidgety ish, so this track won't come as much of a surprise to those who have been reading this space for a minute or two. But isn't it always nice to find a new name? It's like a sickness, sometimes, this craving for new-ness, but oh well. He's called The Bulgarian, and by the look of him, I'm unsure whether he's a liar or not. He'll be coming to your attention in a more serious way in a short time when the up-and-coming fidget powerhouse onthebrink up the stakes in Commerce-ville.

'Listen Man' comes on pleasantly weird, with some kind of crooked pneumatic tube inviting you to travel through some bizarre portal to some bizarre place where people do bizarre things. But they dance, and since at the end of the day, this sound is the only really truly weird thing about this song, they probably don't dance all that bizarrely. But, and I'm saying this all the time lately, that ain't no diss. Dude has been around for a minute, and if you know what's good, you'll peruse his history over at Beatport, namely the 'Loop Poop' EP with the assistance of your credit card, and keep your eyes and ears open for his upcoming releases.

Happy New Year! I hope everybody had a tremendous new year's celebration. We went to a party at a friend's house who has a metal door. We drew with a wipe board marker on the door to indicate variously ascending levels of drunken stupor, and then used magnetic legos to track our progress toward the top marker: face down. Luckily, we didn't make it to face down by 2 o'clock, as we dj'd from 2AM-4 for the afterhours thing at the spot where we do our night. Fun was mostly had, though I was a rare surly sort of drunk. Sorry if anyone reading this was there (I doubt it?) and I was rude to you. If it's any consoloation, by the time I got home I was definitively face down.

I'd also like to put it out there that we have a few openings in our europe dates in the middle of our trip. If you're throwing something between 1/28 and 2/9-ish, get in touch! We'll announce what's upcoming as things are confirmed. The holidays slowed everything down a bit. We're still most interested in England, France, Germany & Italy (not in any kind of cultural patriarchal way, just within the realm of feasible economic scenarios, I swear!).

ANYWAY!

!!! have a new album dropping on Warp pretty soon. In some ways it sounds like kind of a companion piece to the new LCD Soundsystem record. There's a similar amount of variance between the tracks, yet a more or less precise aesthetic. The aesthetic is: my record collection. Not mine, specifically, but theirs. Not that that's a bad thing. My roommate said he thought it sounded as if they've spent too much time with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but personally I don't think that would have ever occured to him if he had not already known they'd toured together last year. I like it. To be honest though, I'm more excited about Free Blood than !!! these days. This is my favorite track from the album by a long shot. The female vocals here are awesome, and I hope someone is smart enough to let this get remixed into something like a proper old school house track. Maybe let Cajmere do it?

!!! - Heart of Hearts (buy it from Bleep when it comes out)

Talk about pleasant surprises! I'd heard a remix of this track, hadn't realized it was a remix, adored it and then I was sent this version and now I'm falling in love all over again. Whatever you're doing in your life, Alex Gopher, just keep doing it. It's working. His upcoming record is the release I am now most excited to hear this year (other than Justice, of course). It kind of caught me off guard because I didn't even know that this is what i wanted, and it's definitely not typical from him. It sounds kind of like New Order and Phoneix (not just because it's French). It's almost sappy sounding, but never crosses the line. Bittersweet has always been my favorite state. I hope you like it as much as I do.

Alex Gopher - Brain Leech

Now this for you. This is more or less the set I played at Cinespace when we played on Boxing Day. I say more or less because I'd forgotten my Midi controller and so I corrected some eq issues when I got home that I had to use the club's mixer for live. Also, I deleted 2 songs from the end. I'm not sure why, but I just didn't want them there anymore. You've probably heard some or most of these songs already (some of them in previous mixes on this site?), but it's very unlikely that many of you have heard our remix of 'Nothing is Getting us Anywhere' by guns'n'bombs. I'm happy to say that this track got the best response out of anything we played all night. So... thanks dancing people! Who knows if anything will ever happen with it, but I hope you like it. I'll likely post the unmixed song file in a few days, I'm still not 100% sure it's done though.

Do you like disco? We like disco, and for some reason we've gotten stuck in this techno thing (we love you, techno, we'll never leave you, even after you bless us with tinnitus and we're too sore and old to dance... speaking of which, I can tell you from experience that if you ever want to know what it's like to be too old and sore to dance, all you have to do is find a 20 foot long strip of artificial snow, preferably compacted to an 8 inch thick pillow of ice, and then get a 20 foot long running start and jump onto a sled on your stomach. Do this approximately 10 times. Being drunk should help you to muster all the courage you'll need for this small, foolish adventure). What were we saying about disco? Oh yeah, we love it. Disco feels like home. Until disco came along, there was a chance this whole music thing was gonna get pretty stale. That's not true, really, but sometimes it feels like it is. I like a lot of different kinds of disco. Gay disco, punk disco, confusing disco, druggy disco, et al.

This kind of disco is like if your mom was caught between being punk and being a disco dancer, but she was still a good mom. I don't know if that's true either. I'm perfectly happy with my own mother, but if I had to choose another one, it might be Vivian Vee. I think I'd be able to dance better if she was my mom. It's totally not a diss to call something mom disco. Ok, it's not mom disco at all, but my mom does like this song, and my mom did used to be a disco dancer.

Vivian Vee - Wanna Feel

This is scary disco, meant to be heard while watching scary movies. I don't like to watch violence onscreen very often. I used to. Maybe Justice do, I would believe it based on the ferocity of their synths. Dario Argento definitely liked to watch bizarre sexualized violence through the lens of a camera. Maybe they like to watch Dario Argento's movies. Or maybe they just like to listen to Goblin, who did a lot of the scores for Argento's movies. It's often just as scary and/or ominous as his movie's. Anyway, we know that at the very least that they sampled Goblin for their new track 'Phantom', which you've almost certainly heard by now. Check the usual suspects for the new quality if you haven't.

Goblin - Tenebre (main theme)

This is disco house. This sounds like being really happy. I didn't think I liked this stuff, since the only song I knew was 'Lady', and I didn't even know I knew that song until today. I wish that I liked the beach, if I did, this would be really good for a boombox on a beach, doing some kind of California thing. I wish the beach had nerf instead of sand, I'd be there every day listening to filter disco like this.

Modjo - Rollercoaster

This is Simian Mobile Disco, and this also my way of sneaking back to techno, by way of disco. I told you, techno, I'll never leave you. I promise. This was met with open arms, as I love SMD, but especially because this song feels like the rightful heir to the recent, mighty 'Hustler'. Thank you, Simian Mobile Disco. Thank you very much. I don't know if this will be a single, but I do think it will be on Kitsune, one of our favorites now and forever.

Here's something from DJ Paparazzi that I certainly wouldn't have thought to combine, but which works surprisingly well. If you're out and about in LA, I'm sure you've probably seen him play by now, but if not, why not tonight? I'm not going to include the name of the acapella just so we don't get bombarded by hits for her, but the backing track is Cirez D - Knockout, which we have posted before and which we are big fans of.

Blamma! Blamma!, purveyors of worthwhile aural adventures out of London, have done Headland the favor of a delicious remix. Headland are an indie band from the UK, sometimes with dancey texture, sometimes with a classic pop feel. In the case of 'Dogging Sisters' it hardly matters, as Blamma Blamma haven't kept much of the original in their mix. The intro starts off in a suitably demented fashion before things kamikaze toward the dance floor in a very exciting way. It's definitely au courant, soundwise, but is spontaneous and thoroughly dangerous and rough sounding as well. Spring-loaded haywire house.

Their myspace is well worth checking out as well for further tunes.

Headland - Dogging Sisters (Blamma! Blamma! mix)

Go check out Fluo or Discobelle for NEW TTC stuff. Their album is a latebreaking contender for my favorite full length of the year. It drops on the 26th of December in France, and January 8th for the rest of the world. So, so, so good. Buy on sight. And then Go over to Shot Callin' and look at what Lazaro's been up to these last few weeks. He swears he's been writing papers for school, but the man's got a remix or an edit for every day of the week somehow!

We have a few things lined up, but we're still working out the scheduling and the best way to traverse the continent. Old school, but totally relevant because all the young dudes and dudettes out there now are still copping shit AVH and Daft Punk were doing all those years ago. Thursday 12/7 - Laguna Art Walk

This is when all the galleries in Laguna open and serve free wine and cheese, and the "edgy" galleries serve bathtub/store-brand vodka and Pabst. We'll be in the museum, which means we'll be drinking something white, probably vodka (hopefully not store brand). This is a fun one because as patrons of the arts go, Laguna has a broad cross-section of ages. Have you ever seen an eccentric octogenerian get down to a Dubsided record? Well, neither have I, but I did play a wedding once (and by once, i mean ONCE [ok, ok, it was a favor to a friend of a friend, and you know what? It was pretty fun. Fun because old people did dance to 'Let There Be Light'). Anyway, if you like art or music, and especially if you like both, you should come to this. The address will be on our myspace for any of these events, btw.

Crash was really fun! Thanks Cheyne, Keith & Ryan!

As is generally the problem with holiday breaks from work (in this case, I've worked 1 out of the last 10 days), I tend to go a little overboard with partying, culminating last night with a ridiculously labor intensive and expensive quest to first get the ingredients to make the perfect Ernest Hemingway Especial (the recipe there isn't exactly perfect. It needs a bit of secret modification. If you really want to try the perfect cocktail, you need to drink this drink at Hyde in Hollyweird, no one does it better), then to make and make and make and make them for myself and friends until a sad lonely, light hour of the night. Well, I have a horrible cold right now and because I'm a little baby about this sort of thing I keep thinking about better ways I could have spent last night. Oh well, fun. It was 10 days of fun in a row. Too much. Let's get bored for a little bit. Oh yeah, that picture above? I got shot by one of those in the head last night. It's not a real gun, but a facsimile that shoots little tiny plastic bullets at a surprisingly high velocity. It kind of hurts-not-hurts. Like for a split second you want to scream, and then you remember that it doesn't really hurt.

Anyway, back to Crash. I recorded the set. It turned out pretty well. Here is another Acid Girls mix adventure for your ears and whatnot.

When our last mix went up on Discobelle, some dude/dudette basically commented, 'this is so 3 weeks ago'. Well, I'm glad clubs are not full of people who spend as much time on blogs as we (and you) do, because we'd be fucked and no one would have any fun. There's some tracks in there that are obviously not so fresh (oh, but they are fresh), but people move to them. I bet you if that person was at CRASH last Wednesday, he/she probably set aside her neophiliac tendencies and busted a move.

This issue was raised recently when some uptight reader commented on Casper C's second most recent post on Fluokids. I don't like to participate in flamewars, so I didn't say anything, but fuck that guy! As I'm writing this my internet connection is down, so I can't confirm it was a guy, but it probably was (it was probably an anonymous comment anyway). Some people are so obsessed with newness that they actively hate on anything that's already been released or blogged elsewhere. You're ruining music for yourself, guy! Get a life! Get out of your leather chair and go out to the club (we'll see you there! you'll be the one scowling with the furrowed brow while everybody else is having a great time!).

Fun new tracks tomorrow likely. Our Teenagers remix (which we should already have finished, but have been depressingly/distressingly otherwise occupied) should be done this week too.

Today I found a cd with music on it that I made along time ago. Most of these were written about 5 years ago. I'm putting them online mostly just for archival purposes, but, I figured, why not share? Maybe someone will like it. It's kind of funny, because the only (non-rock) dance music I liked at that point was Basement Jaxx & 'Windowlicker'. I just didn't get it. I was definitely more into IDM-y type stuff then, and had a fairly slow ravewakening (one which happened too late to have ever attended a legitimate rave) by way of microhouse & DFA. I always had a much easier time writing this kind of music, as opposed to dance music, though I never write things like this anymore. I also almost never listen to this sort of thing anymore. The tracks which feature vocals were sung by my girlfriend Shelley. I didn't really do her any favors with my complete lack of recording/engineering knowledge, so if it sounds good, it's all her and not me, but if it sounds bad, it's more likely to be my fault. Pardon my self indulgence. But not a severe pardon, as we will likely be posting our new productions here shortly.

I had a VERY tough time deciding which song would get this amazing tom of finland piece with it, but i figured that Sirius Mo gets the honors (hope he's ok with overt refrences.) This track reminds me of chromeo in some ways, or anything that would smooth out/funk up a dancefloor and prime it for disco or something organical, i think i could see myself opening up with it. Just a snippet (just edit it over itself a few times tho, thats just my mixtape mind), sorry kids...must buy...but from where? Who knows, maybe send him 1-2 units of your local currency?

musical earthens, this week has been a brutal mess of change, but on the upside the night at CRASH was amazingly fun, I think that LA may be headed for some decent music from the gangofneon girls. The Stone bar is like some off the wall yuppie chinese food joint in the furniture district of god knows where, but between the 360 degree black light bar in the center of the room, lady sov showing up with franki chan, the miscellaneous asian shit hanging from the ceiling and the fact that the owner/manager is dancing/prancing around the room loving every bit of every song he's never heard (thanks to junior sanchez); its awesome, lets do it again. (and btw acid girls will be playing there wed 11/22 the night before [the american] thanksgiving, always a hot night for the danceydancey)

on to sound...i'm sure you know that we're watching australia like a fucking hawk, i think the whole world is. So when we see some new anything from there it can be expected to deliver some refreshing (i think?) twist on whatever they touch. whatever...this is good shit from the bag raiders clan, banggang buddies, aussie heroes (in my house)

Les Visiteurs take Kid Alex into deep, dark acidic territory. Aside from the presence of some 303 sounds, this bears almost no relation to the kind of take they've had on tracks from Snoop Dee Oh Double Gee or Pharrell. I'm almost sure (ok, I am sure) that it samples the same sound that's in the builds of the Boys Noize mix of Bloc Party. I don't really know how to feel about the vocals in the track, they just say kind of cliche things in a tough-ish ambiguous accent, though I like them on the hook, vocoded. It's really all about the synths in this track. They know what they're doing.

This is definitely on the Switch-esque wonkyhouse tip. Shreds the original into a few rhythmic and textural scraps and weaves a tapestry all its own. This makes me really sad about the new Basement Jaxx album, actually, because it illustrates how much potential there is underneath the layers of saccharine garbage.

Some of you have probably heard about Kuduro. It's Portuguese rap with a techno kind of texture. Kind of like grime crossed with baile funk. I know next to nothing about it, including the name of the artist that did this track, but I've been downloading any of it that I can find. I was never really that into Depeche Mode. I tried a couple times, first when I was 13 or 14 and I liked this girl who was kind of pseudo-gothy I tried to get into a lot of the music that she liked, none of it stuck though. Then when Mark Bell worked with them I tried again, but A) It wasn't that great, and B) every single song rhymed like this: wrote boat moat coat dote. It was so unnerving/distracting I had to cast aside. There has been the occasional remix, though, that really makes them seem like they should be a great band, and this is one of them.

Hopefully everyone had as decadent a Halloween as we did. The video below gives no indication of the level of intensity 300 people felt for 5 straight hours while mstrkrft and Justice pummeled us with jab after jab of aural violence. That was a really cheesey way to say that we had a really good time.

I've got a treat for you today, our first official-ish mix. It's basically all about the elemental shit in all these tracks. Of all of the songs on here, I'm most partial to the Steve Angello remix of the MBG & SDS track. I saw Justice play it on Monday night, and MSTRKRFT play it on Tuesday night. Both times it was played, it absolutely slayed the dancefloor.

It feels like I've been so nightmarishly busy lately. I've been trying to finish a mix that I've been working on to give out at a gig we've got coming up at the Laguna Art Museum (scarily, we were told that there were 1600 people there last year!), who knows what people there will want to hear, but hopefully they don't throw sculptures of tomatoes at us. Anyway, if and when I finish it, I'll be sure to post it up here. I've been putting the finishing touches on my own track in the last couple days, and it's sounding determinedly not bad. In addition to the museum thing, we have a few gigs coming up all in a short span of time (including our very own Acid Girls night on Wednesday 11/1, which any and all locals should definitely try to make it out for[though it's likely everyone will be too hungover to make it out, us included), but not before witnessing Justice's west coast debut on Halloween! Hopefully it will be astonishingly bonkers.

I had a bunch of stuff to post and only a limited amount of time to be online this evening, so I have to make these descriptions quick because I'm trying to watch the Vice Travel DVD. Then it's home to pack for a brief road trip. Hopefully I'll be back with more to post on Sunday or Monday.

This is basically Daft Punk's Burnin' 2006. That's not a diss. It's probably one of the best dancefloor tracks I'll hear all year. I wish I had more to say about it, but there's nothing I could say that the track couldn't tell you better.

Phones/Epic Man/ Paul Epworth demonstrates (again) that there's more to his steez than a routine scissorhand to a random postpunky pop track. I think a lot of people really liked it when it first popped up, but the sound just became so ubiquitous that it quickly devolved into self parody when the haircuts matched the angularity of the guitar riffs.

This track is toothy, kind of like a more restless Waters of Nazareth. Very encouraging. I mean, he made me like a Muse song, so I doubt I'll ever second guess his talent again.

Acid goodness and tink-a-dink percussion revelry from 1/3 of whomadewho. Turbo is on a serious roll this year. This, along with D.I.M. and Etienne Daho makes for some very lucky dancefloor denizens.

So I don't know exaclty whats going on here world, but it appears as though no one has posted this Digitalism remix of Atlantis to Interzone, and thats pretty nuts considering how addicted to this shit (klaxons & interweb) we all are; so I'm gunna go ahead and do it. Its in the std. dgtlsm style, thick crunchy synths, stabby stabby vocal bits, and I even get this whole flashing marquee thing from it, like huge banks of lights that strobe at incoming planes...but I have an odd habit of trying to visualize dance music scenery.

So fluokids posted 'the teenagers' track 'homecoming' the same day that I found their myspace, never ceasing to amaze me how parallel we can run sometimes. The Teenagers have since blown up (i think__?) and seem to be getting press and time in various places. I bet they end up in LA sometime soon, they have that cinespace/dimmak look & feel to me, prolly more likely modular though. (just making blind stabs at the future there) Regardless, this remix by Sluttttttttt is good, its got that old rave vocal sound, the effect you used to hear coming from the hardcore tent/room with the demon vocals similar to whats going on in Daft Punk's Brainwasher...you all know wtf I mean. Also the chorus line, "I fucked my american cunt / I loved my english romance" will work on basically any dancefloor forever as well. Next up is their self intro song, We Are the Teenagers, not as striking as the former, but definitely worth the download, and indicative of the influence souljazz and the like has had on the kids.

Boys Noize, how many wonderfully brutal tracks can you make in one tear? Many. many many. Feel Good TV Off might be my favorite boys noize track yet, with massive swelling main line, that reminds me of marching, and again bounces back some of the sounds in brainwasher. I think the trend here today would be "songs with telephone sounding distortion/compression," if i had to lump 'em. It builds to a LFO drop in the middle and comes out swinging the way that any good drop should, i bet you five dollars (US) that this one would bring any club to its feet, and have them getting all sweaty & low at the same time; we'll see next time we play it and let you know. Keep on boys, we need your love...& noize too. Also throwing in the bonus track Lady B - Stripper, which is on boys noize records, no info on it tho, sorry...

We used to do Acid Girls every Wednesday. It got to a point where it was just too much work to promote it, and truth be told, me and Jamie and our friends and the randoms and the people who only come for the free beer probably all lost our enthusiasm for a month or two. So we took it back to the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month. Jamie and I do the first Wednesday, and we have Acid Boys on the 3rd, when the girls play (Sasparilla, Lady Lush & Baby Shoes). Well, now we get all homesick not playing so often. Tonight, the girls play. Tonight we're jealous of you ladies.

Our night is almost a year old. We're trying to figure out how we'd like to commemorate the evening. Any of you famous DJs lurking out there want to let us fly you out, crash on my couch and play for a little bit of cash?

KIM comes through again with another electrohouse banger. What's in the water down there in AUS? Didn't I already ask that? This one's got squelch in the bass and marries Van Halen Cheese and composerly Ryuchi Sakamoto-ness in the repetitive stabs of its breakdown. I have thought a lot about the controversial Neu Rave tag which seems to dog/amuse/not bother Klaxons. I like it, really. I mean, a genre's name is generally fairly arbitrary anyway, and I'd argue that this isn't a genre, but a name for a scene (whether or not NME sell it or not). To me, Neu Rave means, 'Hey, we're not just another band/dj/remixer/designer/whatever, we're here to fucking party.' It's pretty smart, in a way, so as to not get lumped in with other indie bands, which they are and they aren't. They don't seem to care so much about every song being a dance rock thing, if it's necessary, they'll just get their groove on in the remix.

I like their lyrics, a lot, but I like their song titles even more. For some reason I can hear the title in the keyboards of their tracks.

I think this got lost in the enthusiasm people had for 'Radio Fireworks'. Sorry. I know we just talked and all, but I didn't quite get it all off my chest.

I have loved Agoria for a little while now. 'Spinach Girl' was probably my most played song for a few months. My tastes have changed a little since then, and it's almost sort of hard to fathom listening to something that poppy as many times as I did now, but Agoria's come back with something that I plan on playing the shit out of again. It's pretty much the opposite of 'Spinach Girl' in that it's stern, driving Teutonic electrohouse, rather than happy shiny glitchy glitterpop. Blackstrobe meets Washing Up meets a scary alley meets a thunderstorm.

I'm a bit confused about what this track is since I've only got an mp3 of it, but it sounds a bit like Paul Woolford's 'Erotic Discourse', and I recall Audiojack did a mix of that tune, but Phonica tells me that this came before 'Erotic Discourse', so whatever. Where 'Erotic Discourse' was all shimmery white light and jaggedly abrupt shadows, this is a mammoth, swirling percussive turbine. It's similarly got lots of stabs and very smartly applied ring modulation, but isn't alien or austere sounding. Sounds like sweat.

Audiojack - Robot

Thank God I listened past the intro. Not that it's bad or anything, just that I woulnd't pick it up out of a lineup, or a record bin. Sort of like if your Dad was in Digitalism, in a Tortoise sort of mood. Then it's like, 'Oh yeah! What the fuck was I talking about? Oh nevermind, here's some mental bass squiggle to make you forget about all that other shit.' Then he relapses a little bit, but somethings changed. He never really was great at the guitar, but it's serviceable, the keytar-ish solo is rad, and the song's peaks are high. It's fun to listen to and guess what's coming next.

Speedcats - Speedcats (Roel H mix)

Sounds like when people bring New York to my city. I don't know why, but until recently I'd never checked Mike Monday out. Maybe it was the name, maybe it was the (actually not half bad) edit of "White Horse", maybe he killed me in a former life.

This song reps old school. Warehouse-basement-small room-big-room-shouldn't-matter house music.

Remute can't help showing you his sharp sawteeth when he smiles. I think it gives every song he does a little bit of much needed melancholy. There's real feeling here, but it might be of the omg i hope the party's not over (it better fucking not be!) variety. One of the first records I was most excited to play when I finally got my own tables was a Remute record and I haven't been disappointed by him yet. This track will mix with anything too, and by anything of course I mean a refined selection of contemporary minimal house or techno, crooked and rude Francedance (& affiliated) or your average everyday Get Physical electrohouse. Maybe even a little Robag-ish in parts (specifically his remix of Joakim's edit of In Flagranti, but not quite that great [sorry Remute]).

Lastly for today, we have Green Velvet. Not much explanation necessary than to say that no one does what Cajmere does quite so well as Cajmere himself. Definitely make sure to check out the second track as it samples a lot of fun stuff. It's probably as much a dj tool as anything, but still fun.

The sound of poeple piling the cold on the summer's ice cream. Pink, purple, blue lights & strobes instead of sunshine. Keeping it familiar, daft punkfunky house but with enough twists & turns to keep you alert. Various elements of the song play Frogger with the others, each in turn, techno-dos-i-do-ing across the track. It's demure, never fully spinning around, just in patient 3/4 turns. Plus girls like it.

I like that Modular's signees seem to get a free trip to Australia and a
cutbanggangvan shetechcopymodu-makeover (in lovely Tsubi prints, to be sure).

Audion - "Mouth to Mouth" is pretty incredible in the same way that the Carl Craig remix of Delia & Gavin is. Synthetic soul, endlessly reaching. Though you can find it elsewhere, especially in the interweb's lovely giftshops.

Also worth a check is Induceve, the name used by Dave Taylor (Switch, Solid Groove, et al) & Jesse Rose. They first came to my attention when TAPE posted the extremely intense and wonderful "Warehouse Shit". Most of their work as Induceve seems to be in the more traditional house vein, but it's in the playful/sinister mode of Cajmere.

Neither of these get as wonderfully, astoundingly bizarre as their more famous recent mixes, but they're each exemplary of the kind of quality these guys have been mustering for a fair while now. These aren't new, but because I have been enjoying so many of the things these guys have been doing separately lately (namely remixes of the Futureheads, Spankrock & Riton), I thought I'd post a few tracks.

Here's a quick one, i meant to post this last week, dunno what happened. This is hypnolove, i know not much about them, heard it on PIG i think (link bottom right thuur) They seem to have released a full length on...record makers / discograph (?) in 2005, but i never heard it, or of it. The first song madamoiselle reminds me of some ATOC stuff, like the flawless mix and also the fashion brand name song i can't recall the name of right now. So maybe i was sleeping on this, or maybe it didnt get much play, but i am re-posting it anyway. They have a pretty amazing stop (or go) motion video for this song too.

As if to threaten the dance world further, modular and its children/relatives/pets new projects are all over your face with quality; This being the news from Midnight Juggernauts, who have the first full length (?) coming out on cutters, cut copy's label; it gets a dancefloor treatment from Ajax, of the BangGang crew, who we have talked about before, and you should know by now, or you will most certainly fail the dance geotrivia event at the world music blog-off in december. I dont know much about Ajax, although i must assume that he/she likes to assume the position in public at the bang gang's many successful nights of sexual ice-capades. Five score and many Eyars agone (Eyar being a web year = 2 months) there was a flurry of remixes of roxy musics 'main thing,' flowing thru the interrealm, and this is one of them, by rub'n'tug. Tis of low quality purposefully, as humans need to support humans by purchasing singles and albums and shit that pays them beyond their benefactorial allowances.

apparently no one knows where to buy this...hmm....well lets keep looking, its worth the 12" price to me, also let me know if anyone knows where/when to get this properly.

Additionally, (and i don't know why i did not make this addendum prior) it has been brough to my attention that the mix I have been playing and listening to more often that the RnT one is this Asparagus edit of the aforementioned roxy track. I think that before i had no idea who Asparagus was, and possibly had some sort of block about writing/ posting blind, although I suppose we don't really know any of the ppl who send us stuff, so that may be moot. This is a good track for your unsuspecting crowds, the ones who will stand cool to the bar, then pretend not to be way into hearing the brians (eno/ferry) in a track they don't recognize right off. re-digressing...Asparagus is a nice fellow I spoke to recently up in the nyc, cohorts of Rub'n'Tug, tim love lee (tummy touch, are you still out there?) , (i'll assume harvey by proxy) and several other dirty bearded disco prelegends. Also the 2nd song, love buzz is another cool slice of disco pie, replete with sitar, fnky breaks, and vocal hooks abounding, feels liek the type of track that would garner a spotter or two somehow.

I had to post today. I had a deadline of 4pm otherwise I'd have to lash myself with a telescopic antenna or some such. Anyway, first off, with something I've been loving lately from a new duo called Guns'n'Bombs. They're Johnny Love from Opaque (and all sorts of lascivious Chicago sordidness) and Filip from Ima Robot. Firstly, I'm excited because it's a completely storming zipline dropkick slapstick horror of a track. Secondly, I'm excited because Johnny just moved to LA from Chicago and is playing about town, and there's finally people in my area putting shit out that I like. Thirdly, I'm excited for them because Kitsune picked this up, supposedly along with 2 other tracks.

I know Fluokids (who now more than ever are doing an incredible job) put this up the other day, and Shot Callin before them, but I don't particularly care about exclusivisity (maybe), and this song is just too good to not post it. I had considered posting an earlier mix of it, as it's the version I'm most accustomed to hearing, but the addition of vocoder sample and a more finished ending (as well as assorted refined zips, buzzes and whistles) will probably be pleasing to you.

It's kind of in the style of a lot of the harder stuff coming out of Paris and from MSTRKRFT and that sort of thing, but still manages not to rip anyone off. My friend Sean says he can hear a lot of old school Chicago in it, I don't know though, but I guess it would make sense). The bassline sounds like it's cutting through iron with a hacksaw and the edits are whiplash inducing.

Hopefully we'll be having these guys down to Acid Girls some day soon-ish.

Everyone has their favorite Warriors gang. A person's choice would probably be a pretty accurate personality assessment. I like the Baseball Furies because I like Baseball clothes, war paint, and smashing things with a baseball bat every once in a while. Plus, the Furies moved to the UK and started making really fun and confusing dance music. It sounds (nothing?) like
(DFA - disco )+ (Cajmere - Percolator [green velvet]) + (Maurice Fulton - Boof) / Da Funk * something else entirely.

Next up is a really good remix of the Futureheads. They've been blogged so many times I don't really even feel the need to say anything about them except to say that if Digitalism and a couple of the more melodic noise dudes worked on a remix of the Futureheads it would probably sound a little bit like this. It's tuneful, driving, melancholy and kind of experimental in texture.
It's from the 679 recordings label, always worth checking their stuff out. This mix was taken from their Myspace remix page thing. I kind of wonder if this is the right credit, but it's what the file said when I got it.

Then we have Passions. More stop start rough house. Fun dance music, fun listening music. Intricate, well produced, edit heavy with a thick bassline played on a real bass. I think this surfaced a while ago, but some guy emailed it to me saying that his friend made it. I like it. You should hear it. It has the best counting sequence I've heard in a song for a long time, for whatever that's worth. And that's not even the best part of the song. No, really though, he lives in Brooklyn and appears to be of the Johnny Love school of debauchery and antics, or so his myspace would make me think. Go to his Myspace to hear his batshit insane mix of Adam Kesher.

I think I'll be tired of this kind of thing in the near future if only because so many people are producing stuff like it. But there's also the chance that through the democratization of technique and style, innovation will be inevitable and apparent. ANYWAY. For now, I love it.

Shakes (or, London's A.R.E. Weapons - but more London-y and less A.R.E. Weapon-y, and also this statement is completely unqualified). It does sound like these guys could take on the Baseball Furies and it might be an even match though. Or they could battle in other ways (i.e., on the decks, on record, on mixtapes & diss tracks, or through telekinesis). I'm not sure if it's delibrate or not, but this song uses the word 'sister' in its title, and its bassline sounds a little bit like "Sister Savior" by The Rapture. For a lot of reasons this shouldn't be as interesting as it is, but because it's good at what it does, it's a good track. It's got that attitude infused disco march thing happening. Their other tracks don't do this so much (dark, heavy, a bit more digital) and are equally good.

Here's my Ableton set from last night.

There's probably a few things I would do differently, but over all it worked out pretty well. It's only the second DJ set I've ever done with it, and the first that I've done since my Mac died. It's pretty heavily edited. And probably pretty heavily pandering... some of which worked and some of which surprisingly didn't. C'est la vie. Not the most obscure tracklist, but hopefully you find it creatively mixed.

Long time no blog. I have a lot of work to do w/ regard to motivation/effort/etc/et/f/c. I'm sick, I feel like I only have about 20 % of my breathing capacity. I'm cranky without my cigarettes, though I'm also trying to use this as an opportunity to quit. The last week has been fun, though... I've spent a fair few minutes defending Uffie, after having seen her last week at Cinespace.

Likely comments: Dude, she can't even rap. Dude, she seemed really nervous. Dude, she had no breath control.

But maybe I should worry less about these sorts of things. I get their point, but they miss hers, maybe.

Ok, anyway, batter up. First song is a fun one. Ed Laliq is an old friend of ours. He probably doesn't know that. That's okay though. He's probably better friends with a Man Like Me though, whatever that means. Maybe it means he's remixed Man Like Me's "Friends". Ok, I've confused myself. But he has done that. It's a bit epic but not really in a silly way, and it has all sorts of fun squiggly noises and rings and buzzes and other lovely aural embellishments. I will say that it's pretty muh only dance music though. That's not to say I wouldn't/don't enjoy hearing it outside the club context, but I do think of it more for its utility than anything else. I have always wondered if this is a characteristic to a song's disadvantage, or what it says about me as a listener vs. me as a dj.

The release comes out on the wonderful NonStop label, run by Mr. Gabriel Olegavich (a.k.a. Mr. Gabriel Prokofiev [grandson of the famous composer] composer of allegedly fine New Music, a.k.a., guy who made a lot of Lady Sov's beats, a.k.a. guy who writes and produces a lot of Spektrum's songs, a.k.a. Medasyn, who has remixed even Xtina, weirdly enough). There are a slew of terrific releases from Nonstop, though they don't seem especially web saavy as labels go, so I would recommend you take a visit to their Boomkat page if you are interested in purchasing something from them, which we heartily ecourage.

Song number 3 is this thing here, written by a buncha street toughs. Maybe the Rapture used to sound kind of tough, but in the five songs I've heard from the new album, they definitely don't. And they never really sounded tough, they just sounded like maybe they carried knives or a strip of barb wire or something around. But now they sound more like they carry pockets full of smiles. It's not a bad thing, either, it's just different. They seem to have delibrately distanced themselves from the DFA aesthetic, instead opting for a lot of polish, a lot of compression, and a lot of... err... ELO. On this song anyway.

20JFG said they thought Echoes sounded dated. I don't think it sounded dated so much as that it sounds like a time and place. I think there's a difference. It doesn't make me want to pull Echoes out and listen to it, necessarily, but there's a few things on there I don't think I'll ever get tired of hearing. And so far there's not much I've heard of this album sampler that has the same effect. I do like this song though, possibly just because I'm a sucker for this kind of intro. And zaps and whizzes and disco beats, of course.

Song number 4 is probably my favorite here. Zdar's gotten a bit of discussion lately because of the new Cassius album, which, as far as I can tell, is seemingly just a new Zdar album, as he'd done demos of quite a few of the tracks on it some time ago. Well, this should have been on it. Imagine a sweaty punk lothario, stalking the French Riviera in white linens, cavorting with the idly rich wives of a hundred vacationing Mediterranean men as they attend their business meetings. He entertains them at the palatial estate he's borrowing from a friend. They stalk around the house lazily, in various states of undress, as he moves from room to room singing this song to them.

The deal was (and i know this shit has circulated a bit in the last few) Mick Jones first mixed this thing as a 2 disc to be called 'Rat patrol...' with all sorts of interesting differences and alt. versions of the songs that finally finished the album, anyway, Glyn Johns cut out alot of material to make the album obv. shorter and more palatable for the masses, however with songs like the original version of 'Atom Tan' and the instrumental gem, 'Walk Evil Talk,' this thing is like the new Clash album you never knew about. (unless you've read Last Gang in Town or used to read the london's burning [ and you know anything on geocities sunset strip was good ] or clash zone [gone, RIP] sites in '93 and follow the obscenely confusing world of how/when the clash's material was released globally) Here are 2 bits of it that made my day.

pretty sure you can't buy this anywhere, but feel free to buy every clash album ever as they are all amazing, and of course it is still the only band that matters.

on that note, and taking into consideration the heavy influence the clash has on the worlds music, electronic-ish stuff in particular, i am dropping a bit of Punks Jump Up, on cassette records.

These guys appear to have studied the clash sound so intensely that their remix/production works are a viable continuation of the sound we love to love, its like there is some actual bloodline being carried here, from the somewhat shaky tremolo guitars with imperfect dub delay; to the many many hand drums that appeared all over clash albums; PJU even look like the clash, and have a red star on their boombox in the single picture i could find of them, but i digress. The point is, you could play these tracks back to back with alot of the '85 mikey dreaded NYC dancfloor remixes and no one would know that theres no jones, strummer, headon, or simonon going on in the room, which is possibly the biggest compliment i can think of.

So if your in the crown tonight, then have a drink on me.

I've never done it before. Drugs mostly scare the shit out of me. Even seemingly harmless over the counter ones. I have been known to get fall down drunk though. I think it's that the correlation between (with alcohol) what i'm ingesting and the way that I am feeling seems so clearly defined that I don't think to fear it, whereas with almost anything else, it's all such an internal mystery. Sometimes I wish my skin was transparent (and I guess the muscles too) and I could watch everything working, you know, just to double check.

Anyway, yeah, ecstasy. I think about it a lot, both the drug and just the general concept of being ecstatic, and the various sorts of ecstasy a person can be transported to. It's the main thing I look for in music, it's the thing I love most about dancing, fuck, it's the main thing I look for in all art and life in general. That transcendent thing that makes you feel less alone, like, okay, someone else felt this way at least once, I'll be okay, or I'll come down, or omg life is like so rad and stuff.

The first song here is a cover of one of my favorite songs of all time, the gorgeous, lush (and ummm, ecstatic) "Your Love" by Frankie Knuckles done by the London based band Friendly Fires. I guess it's worth mentioning that Klaxons have covered "The Bouncer", and that it's likely that Friendly Fires were possibly inspired by that to cover this, but I love "Your Love" and I don't have any special feelings toward "The Bouncer" so that's that.

The Frankie Knuckles original is sweat drenched 4 AM I CANNOT LEAVE NOW OR POSSIBLY EVER music. The cover is definitely not superior to the original, but it's very, very good. I'm actually a little surprised that I like it as it sounds like it could probably do fairly well on a mainstreamish radio station. It's got that modern rock sheen thing that I usually hiss at. Radio rock has absorbed enough of the post-punkification of bass and drums that no one would ever think that this was once a *GASP* house song. So I like it, maybe it's the source material, maybe it's the repetition or maybe I'm just softening, I don't know.

What's even weirder is that I like the second song. It's your standard rollicking kind of Broken Social Scene-esque anthemic indie rock. Would generally be way too indie for my liking, but I'm guessing it's because their cover of "Your Love" puts it into a context that I can evaluate it as something else. It's kind of soundtracky music, and sounds a little earnestly dated. I mean this in a really nice way, but I would be sort of happy to see this be used in advertisement for a product that I probably wouldn't be interested in buying... I probaby wouldn't change the channel. That was not a backhanded compliment.

I don't know much about the band really. I found them through a series of links from the Myspace page of (the glorious) Nightmoves. And they don't really say much about themselves there either, except that they will soon be releasing a 10" single on Strange Boutique, a label I couldn't turn up any info about after a cursory Google query. I honestly don't know which, if any, scene they fit into. The cover and the Nightmoves (and by proxy, Klaxons) affiliations make me think they're part of the "new rave" thing or whatever, but they don't sound at all like Klaxons. Klaxons are bizarre ecstatic menace, and these guys are bittersweet ecstatic drift. I love them both.

So when they release something, buy it, they seem very nice.

Then there's the dancing sort of ecstasy, and for whatever dumb reason, it's attached to the drug, as though you couldn't experience it without rolling. Then again, hearing this song makes me want to take it and worry about the (probably imaginary) consequences later. But no, cowardly lion that I am, I won't.

Gui Boratto - Like You (SuperMayer mix)

I go in phases with Kompakt stuff. I'm not really interested in super tracky music, so they lose me every so often, but then they'll come back with something like this, a monolithic paean to resplendent unearthly joyful abandon. If I traveled to some parallel reality where pursuing a life of unabashed hedonism wouldn't dissapoint my parents and whomever else cares, I wouldnt need to hear any other song but this one for the rest of my life. And no matter how many options I had there, I probably would just go back and forth between lying down and listening to it and dancing in some gay Ferngully style rain forest club with a light up dancefloor and Daft Punk robots chasing Daft Punk skeletons up and down a ziggurat.

Or maybe I should big up XXJFG here and align myself with them and Miyazaki.

The union of Superpitcher and Michael Mayer is a beautiful thing. And this is the best thing either of them have done since Superpitcher's remix of The MFA's "The Difference".

You can buy it here or in a billion other places, and you definitely should because MP3s sound like shit according to experts, apparently. But in actual fact, the real reason to buy it so that there are more records like thi-- oh nevermind, you already know why.

Our local record dig, Noise Noise Noise is going out of business in the next month sometime, so all of us djs went on down and picked up some gems for 75% off (working out to like 1-5 dollars for even the rarest of the bunch) I personally came up on 5 or so total blind buys and ended up with the best 15 dollar set ever lost into the disco aftermath of the US. I will, undoubtedly be posting 5 or more of these in the near future, and satan willing, the place will be around long enough to get at least 100 more lbs of plastic for my pleasure.

Last night we had... I don't know... I could figure it out, but probably about the, umm, 19th or so Acid Girls night, I think. No one really danced which always makes me feel like an iPod. I even told them Iso was gonna cry if they didn't, callous bastards. They're still coming out, they're just not dancing much. It's probably us.

And you know what? Fuck Serato. Maybe we're just stupid, but that shit is hard to get to work at the bar. Works perfectly at home though. Still haven't had a proper set with it... Always winds up back to records and cd's.

Anyway.

Ahh, Matty Safer. Such a jumble of nerves, he tells us. But we already knew, because (thankfully) he sings like he's stuck in an electrified body suit. And Tiefschwarz, steadfastly hit or miss for me, they deliver something truly great on this one, surely a pop hit in some not too distant galaxy. This song's probably been blogged to death, but I never saw this mix up and it's my favorite one. I have no idea who One-Two are, but they've done a fantastic job remixing "Warning Siren" into some sort of perverse cocktail that sounds like what might have happened if Daft Punk had produced Three Dog Night with arrangements by a malfunctioning time travelling robot protege to Henry Mancini. And, uh, with guest vocals by the guy from the Rapture.

The funny thing about this record is that I was shopping at Amoeba for it with the other Acid Girl and we both got to the record at about the same time... but he'd been looking for it for longer than I had which made it sort of awkward because I actually (sort of sneakily) found it first. There was also a vinyl copy of Daft Punk's Homework record which we both wanted, so we more or less flipped for it and I wound up with the Daft Punk, so he's the one that always plays this song.

Kimberley Isaac Moyes (KIM to everyone but his mama, apparently) seems like a pretty naughty human being for some reason. Maybe it's the haircut, maybe it's the obvious 'tude or maybe it's the badass tracks. They sound kind of like they were made by a guy who looks like a sissy but can actually totally kick ass when necessary, probably using a broken bottle or a switchblade. Australia is kind of like France Jr. right now, and I don't mean that in a patronizing way. It's just that maybe the influences are floating on some sort of ocean current down that way. No that's stupid. Maybe when a butterfly flaps its wings at Trash something happens to Pedro Winter or SebAstian gets a remix commission, or maybe Gaspard from Justice twitches, but then somehow soon after that KIM or Nicky Van She or Cut Copy do something really cool. I heartily recommend checking Juno for the already released Wild n Wet 12", on which "System Breakdown" is my preferred tune, though they're both great.

So we watched the justice record release party video, and the i.tripped.over.a.job.and.stifled.my.ambitions fairy came back to me, and all of a sudden paris looks like the place i was supposed to fall out of mother into. In the video there is an artist by the name of surkin who is on institubes (with tacteel, para one, etc.) in the vid, he does a lil edity version of waters of nazareth using what seem to me the hot cues on the cdj-1000's and it makes for a sweet lil number. Theoretical Girl

For the past however many years now my tastes have been getting increasingly narrow. I basically only listen to various permutations of dance music and/or kinda sad contemporary classical music like arvo part or max richter or saddish digital pop (not pop) like fennesz or stuff that combines those things. That's probably not true at all but it seems that way.

Theoretical Girl is music to remind people that as much fun as you're having dancing, you're probably still not that happy. The same aggravations exist, and you'll remember them in the morning. And in this song, maybe she's even talking about you. She's definitely talking about me. I feel like ever since I started DJ'ing, I've been sort of slowly developing a drinking problem. Maybe you go out on Friday and Saturday no matter what, but then you make friends with other people that have nights, or with bands or whatever, and soon you're going to their nights and their shows and next thing you know you're out five, six, seven nights a week, drinking, still getting up at 6:45 AM for work. Even after you adjust to three or four hours of sleep most nights, you never really escape the feeling of what it is to be sleep deprived. Sometimes when I get drunk I'm a really fun guy, sometimes when I get drunk I become a total asshole. I'm not usually a happy or nice person Monday-Friday from about 6:45 AM til around 11:00 AM.

This song serves as a reminder for the way you might feel the next morning. And maybe reminds you that you were a jerk. But kindly, she still lets you dance, with the de rigeur semi-detached vocals, glorious metronomic machine gun disco beats, shiny chrome guitars with precise robotic sustain, and a bassline that tells you to not give a fuck about the rest of it anyway. Just keep moving, at night, at work, keep thinking, like the used to say-- keep dancing. It'll be okay.

Not to be confused with Theoretical Girls, but we'll save that for a different post.

On the other side of the universe, far enough way that you can see the back of Theoretical Girl's head if you squint, is this beautiful mess. Here comes Busy P, with his cartoon fists flailing, beating the living shit out of Fancy. I guess when you're hopped up on PCP and there's no cars nearby to toss into outer space, you might as well make an apocalyptic suicide house track. With all the wonderful completely baffling evilsweet music coming out of France right now I am terrified that by the time I plan to (likely) move there in a year it might all be over. This remix takes a fairly standard lite pop funk track and stabs it repeatedly and then bandages the wounds in acid soaked gauze.

Where Theoretical Girl aims to unnerve you, to make you think about yourself and not to let you find abandon so easily, and thereby defy the conventional mode that dance music operates in (not that that's a terribly new idea, it's just done really well here), Busy P pretty much just wants to push the button that makes your brain explode on the middle of the dance floor, no thoughts, or at least no contemplation. When it doesn't work, at the end, he offers you a little bit of fun, and also an easy way to mix into another record that's not as severe if you prefer. I feel like I'm kind of saying the same thing over and over, maybe it's because the song has scrambled me up.

I'm just guessing here, but I genuinely think this is a collaboration between Busy P (our radical Ed Banger main dude Pedro Winters), Justice, Sebastian & (drum roll) Daft Punk. Or maybe it's just Winters showing off to all his friends that he can do what they do better. Either way. It's essential.
